After graduation from the University in 2000, Bekkin’s main preoccupation has been academic research and teaching. In 2003, he received his Ph.D. in law having defended a thesis on Islamic insurance. After that, he broadened the scope of his research from Islamic law into Islamic finance and further to the concept of Islamic economic model. Over the years, he has become the leading researcher in Russia in this field. Bekkin is the author of twelve monographs and more than one hundred articles published in Russian and foreign peer-reviewed journals (including the monographs Insurance in Islamic Law: Theory and Practice (three editions: 2001, 2012, 2015); Islamic Economic Model Nowadays (three editions: 2008, 2009, 2010); Muslim Petersburg (2016).
Although the focus of Bekkin’s research has historically been Islamic law and finance, he has always been much interested in Islam in general. In 2006, he joined the Non-for-profit Foundation ‘Mardjani’ as chief editor of a literary-philosophical journal ‘Chetki’ (Rosary) and later on in 2010 became the head of the Mardjani Publishing House, the only academic publishing house specializing on Islamic studies. He left the publishing house in 2012.
In the same year (2010), Bekkin became one of the founders of the Chair of Area and Islamic Studies at the Kazan Federal University (Kazan, Russia). In 2015, he founded and became editor-in-chief of the academic journal, the Kazan Islamic Review.Renat Bekkin holds an honorable title of Professor of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2016).
